This is the House of the Tree. It was a project by Sander Architects. The house is located in West Stockbridge, Ontario, Canada. The construction of the house was completed in 2010. The house sits on a 2 acre site. It was constructed on a base while adjacent other houses on the same site continued to be built in the past.
The house is located at the base in nature. The stone construction continues to be a prominent element in the landscape, even in the backyard. The site is surrounded by trees and grass on all sides. In order to allow as much natural light to get in as possible, the architects designed the house with a series of porches and louvers. They also decided to wrap the roof of the house with a beautiful green roof that creates a strong contrast with the dark exterior of the house.
The interior of the house is very open. It has long and narrow windows that not only fill the voids in the façade, but they also let light flood into the rooms and only open the space to the north and west. This is not only a functional design, but also a modern one. With walls of the skylight above a series of voids, the house opens and transforms thus allowing the exterior spaces to become more than they naturally. The light that flows in the skylight bathes the interior, allowing it to become a welcoming and equ spirited space for the children to play. The interior is simple and elegant. Natural materials were used in the exterior as for the slabs and the kitchen cabinetry and the wood floor in the bathrooms.
